Bio

Chris Higgins is a writer, educator, and historian based in Toronto. Born in Montreal and raised across Canada, he studied English Literature at McGill and began his career as an advertising copywriter, where he developed a love for storytelling and technology. After earning his B.Ed. and later a Master’s in English, Chris taught for 29 years – most notably at Swansea Public School, where he also led award-winning student media projects, hosted poetry slams, and helped launch one of Toronto’s first elementary school podcasts.

Since retiring in 2020, Chris has authored BRICK by BRICK, a history of Swansea School, and RIVERSTORYZ: Conversations on the Humber River. He is currently completing The Gaol Carpenter’s Diary, a true crime novel set in 19th-century Toronto. Chris has volunteered with Heritage York and Mapping Our Memories, helping to preserve and share local histories. In 2025, Chris was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to local heritage and education. He is part of a close-knit family that includes his wife Sue, their four children, his mother Peggy, and four siblings.
